Klezmer Festival in Safed -- August 6, 7 and 8 2013
The 2013 Klezmer Festival marks the 26th year of the three-night open-air Klezmer Festival in Safed. Stages are set up throughout the city and visitors can wander from stage to stage through the alleyways and lanes of the Old Jewish Quarter and Artist Quarter. Performances begin approximately 9:00p.m. and go through until after midnight. The performances are free and are all located within a 5 - 15 minute walk of each other in the town's center.
The roads into Tzfat are close to non-city residents at approximately 17:00 and visitors park outside the city and take local buses into the city (paid parking and paid buses). Once in the city, visitors can walk around the lanes of the Old City/Artist Quarter and wander from stage to stage.
A word to the wise: Visitors who prefer to spend the night in Tsfat, or arrive earlier in the day and stay until nighttime, can do so, and attend all of the performances with no required entry payment. HOWEVER, if you're coming in to spend the night, you MUST arrive before 17:00 -- otherwise the roads will be blocked. Public transportation generally operates on a regularly-scheduled basis, but it's a good idea to call the specific bus company and double-check.
During the week immediately following the Klezmer Festival, a five-day "Artists Class" series takes place in Tzfat in which selected students study with some of the top Klezmer musicians including Hanan Bar Sela. Each evening the students perform (free) at the Saraya (Wolfson Center) near the city center.
